Wow, JBL hit a grand slam with this one! Never before has someone created this combination of size, sound quality, loudness, bass response, splash proof all for only $99!
I have previously owned UE boom, Denon Envaya mini and JBL charge plus 2. These are the Flip 3's closest competitors. Here is my summary of the competition.
UE boom: the reason I believe the UE boom is so popular is the form factor is just right and its loud for it's size. What I don't like about the UE Boom is it's $200 price tag and almost no bass whatsoever.
Denon Envaya Mini: so close, I just wish it was louder and the battery would only last a few hours a moderate volumes.
JBL Charge 2+: overall really good speaker, my two issues are, the sound profile is too bloated. Yes it has good bass for it's side but it tends to drown out the higher frequencies and has quite a bit of dynamic compression at high volumes. Also I just wish it was a little smaller to fit in camping chair cup holders and more portable.
And now for the JBL flip 3: it's as loud as the UE boom, does not have the battery life issues of the Denon and does not have bloated bass like the charge 2+. The sound profile is well balanced, the upper frequencies are slightly upfront with decent bass for it's size. My prediction, this will be the best selling Bluetooth speaker in it's class!

I've been looking for a Portable Bluetooth Speaker for a few months, never overly happy with the sound of most. A few blogs had mentioned the UE Boom and MegaBoom as the go-to speakers, and while I liked their connectivity and the ability to daisy chain multiple speakers, personally I thought they sounded terrible. Enter the JBL Flip 3.
I initially saw these on a European blog, and the reviews were great. While it's hard to get a sense of a speaker via a YouTube review, I liked what I saw. Being a fan of the sound of the JBL Charge 2, I figured if these were anything close to the Charge 2, with the added connectivity and water resistance, I had finally found my speaker. The Flip 3 arrived promptly thanks to Amazon Prime, and I was eager to get home and try the unit out. First of all, the packaging is georgious, great presentation on the part of JBL for a speaker priced at under $100. The unit comes charged, so I was able to quickly pair it with my iPhone and try it out. Sound is simply incredible for such a small speaker. Indoors the sound fills a room without issue, but this speaker REALLY shines outdoors. Great frequency coverage, but a slight distortion in the lows at higher levels (keep in mind this is a $99 speaker). If you have been searching for a lower cost Bluetooth Speaker that actually sounds great, look no further than the JBL Flip 3.

I have the Charge 2 and the Xtreme. Both EXCELLENT and now I have the Flip 3. This thing is sprinkled with fairy dust. I have to ask myself "what witchery is this". There is no way this speaker should sound this good but it does. Really it does. I bough from BB so I could have instant gratification. Anyone who rates this less than a 5 should go get a diagnosis.

Upgraded from the Flip2 to the Flip3. Some quick thoughts...
Not really much of an improvement in the sound department.
Range seems to be better with the Flip2
No carrying case with the Flip3. I thought the case was a nice touch to protect the speaker in my bag when traveling.
Bottom line if you're looking for a Bluetooth speaker the Flip3 is phenomenal. If you're looking to just upgrade to the new model (like I was) save your money and keep the Flip2. Flip2 is also a wonderful speaker.
